Owen-isms

  • Owen ran through the living room very quickly and I said "Hey, where's the fire!?" He stopped, turned and pointed to the fireplace and said, "fire."
  • I asked Owen who his friends are. He said "Chase." I continued to ask him "Who else?" and this is what he said in order: Mommy, umm... Daddy, ummm... Owen, ummm... Mommy, Daddy, Mommy, Daddy. He has lots of friends.
  • Owen cannot even begin to say the name of our current house guest, Kathleen, so he calls her "people." Yesterday, before she got home, I asked him where Kathleen was. He said "people sleeping."
  • If you drive past Panera, Owen screams "eat! eat!" and becomes upset that we don't stop. When we see a McDonalds he says "fries", any one of his chain daycares "school", to any starbucks "coffee." He knows when we are close to any train tracks and yells "choo choo!" He knows where some tractors are and will point them out, even in the dark when they aren't visable. If we drive past the street to our house, he becomes upset and yells "HOME!"
  • We went to a new coffee shop for parents and little kids and Owen spent almost 2.5 hours at the train table. If any other kids tried to play with it or take the trains, he had an absolute fit and would chase them down. We're working on sharing. But when it comes to trains ... watch out.

Little Owen…

…Is not so little any more! He is now 19 months old! His 18-month check up went well. We are very pleased with our new pediatrician! He has not grown much taller over the last 6 months so he’s down to the 50th percentile in height from about the 90th and his weight is also now around the 50th. His head circumference, however, is off the charts! It could be because he knows so many words now! He says (and/or signs) well over a hundred words (the pediatrician was expecting about 6 words at his age) and is working on stringing them together and annunciating more syllables in long words. Some of his ‘sentences’ sound like “milk in bottle”, “dada bike ride” and my favorite one :“oops dada poop.”

We are fairly certain now that Owen has a cow’s milk allergy. He had a hacking cough and some cold symptoms fairly regularly for a while. We saw several pediatricians as we explored all of the doctor’s in Owen’s previous Pediatrician’s office and he was put on medications and inhalers and we were told he probably has asthma and/or allergies. Our new Pediatrician, however, suggested we take him off cow’s milk and see what happened. He got better. We re-introduced cow’s milk last week and he immediately began hacking again. So now he’s back on Almond milk (he refuses to drink soy and I cannot blame him).

He was officially moved up into the Toddler classroom with the two-year olds at school. He loves it there and we are happy about the move. The format is similar to the 1-year old room but they do more structured learning activities.

Owen and I go to Music Together class once per week. Owen’s favorite part is playing the instruments and dancing. Daddy and Owen take swim lessons on Saturdays. Owen loves to jump into the pool but is less than thrilled with some of the other activities. He is far-and-away the youngest in both classes.

And if you haven’t noticed yet, Owen absolutely, positively loves trucks and tractors. Buses and cars were SO last month. Trains are still pretty cool but take a back seat to the more manly machines. Sometimes just as we think he has fallen to sleep for the night, he will shoot up in bed and say “TRACTOR!” He likes to yell and point out “big rig!”, “tractor!”, “digger!”, “plane!”, “’copter!”, “truck”, and “BIG truck!” as we drive down the road. Luckily, a freight train and the MAX train both run near our house. We also live in farm country and drive past the Hillsboro Airport every day.

Trick or Treat!

We took Owen trick or treating at the businesses on Main Street in downtown Hillsboro, and then around our culd-e-sac. He really enjoyed the kids coming to the door for candy the most though. Travis kept saying "you have to wait for more people" and Owen would stand by the door with candy in-hand saying "people, people!" By 9 PM we had to turn out our lights because we ran out of our 10 bags of candy! We were surprised at how many kids were still coming down the street at 9!
