What's New?

Thought I'd re-cap some new stuff in Owen's World (Yes, "Owen" substitutes well in the "Elmo's World" song!).
  • Owen just learned the sign for light, although it (and many other signs) are a little too complex for his hand coordination right now so it just looks like he's waving at the ceiling. He also says 'lie' as he signs it. Which is the first time I've really heard him say anything starting with L.
  • Likewise, he's absolutely fascinated by lights and the fact that light switches control the lights! We have rocker switches in our house and he has a hard time controlling them himself.
  • He now signs: more, all done, milk, light, and down. I think he was too focused on his new walking skills recently to want to really pick up any more but I think he's ready to start picking up more signs now. He just learned light and down in the past couple of days.
  • He says: mama, dada, ball, more, all done, milk, light, book, keys. Surprising to me that he can say more than he can sign! I think that will change soon.
  • He's really working on exercising his vocal cords these days. He constantly babbles in what sounds like a foreign language.
  • He's very into pointing now and saying something that sounds like "this". As I carry him around he'll point at things he wants off counters and shelves and say "this" (but they are probably on counters or shelves because he's not supposed to have them)!
  • He LOVES watching videos of himself on the computer. He'll go up to the computer and point and say "this."
  • He has definitely mastered walking. I decided that he'd be an official walker once I was comfortable letting him walk on cement ... and he's been doing that for many weeks now.
  • He is starting the climbing thing... he tries to climb on anything that is about waist-height ... usually toys.
  • He is a bully. He walks up to other babies and kids and smacks them in the face. It's actually affectionate smacking... but the babies and kids might disagree. He hasn't mastered "gentle" quite yet.
  • He thinks he can keep up with big kids at playgrounds. In fact, if they are in his way, he does not hesitate to push them aside. Most seem taken aback by this little baby walking up to them, taking their toys, and pushing them aside. Luckily, his bullying is unintentional at this point.
  • He learned how to throw a ball a while ago ... and unfortunately, he now throws other toys as well.
  • He loves books, balls and cars.
  • He weighed 21 pounds, 14 ounces last week at the doctor visit.

Easter Baby

Owen completed an Easter egg hunt (at 7 AM) in our living room today. Once I demonstrated the task, he did very well, walking around the living room gathering eggs and placing them into the basket. Although occasionally he'd want to stop and take the eggs out, examine them, open them, and potentially eat the contents. (The eggs contained Cheerios. Woo hoo!)

It occurred to me today that Owen's birthday may someday fall on Easter (thanks to Amelia, whose 1st birthday is today! Happy birthday to Amelia!). I decided to look into it. Turns out that Easter falls on April 4th 8 times between 1875 and 2124. Including the year 2010, 2021, 2083 and 2094; Owen's 3rd, 14th, 76th, and 87th birthdays. Easter is not a big holiday for us, so it shouldn't be a big deal at all. In fact, we had to think really hard about what we did last Easter... then we remembered we had a 4-day old baby and we took him to the doctor for jaundice!

Hope everyone had a great Easter, even if you didn't get plastic eggs filled with Cheerios!

Healing

Owen woke up last Monday morning (the 17th) with a rash on his back. It spread everywhere including his face as the week progressed. Then Friday morning he woke up with really red, crusty eyes. A trip to the doctor confirmed pink eye. We're attempting to get drops in his eyes and we think he's healing ...

Giggles

Busy Bees

Sorry for the lack of posts this week. We’ve been keeping ourselves very busy! So far this week Owen and I have gone to PB & Ellie’s Cafe, the mall, the Zoo, the Children’s Museum, countless stores, and play dates. And no, I didn’t take a single picture at any one of them!

And naps? Who needs naps!? Sleep? Who needs sleep?

Here are some picture of Owen in his St. Patty's Day green!

Week in Pictures

Showing off his Seattle flannel shirt style.

Climbing my leg. What else is new?

Brushing his hair. (Yes, it's actually a comb but we only know the sign for 'brush', okay!)

Wearing his little-little-little-little league uniform. He's a starting pitcher.

Take Your Baby to Work Day?

Owen (and I) tried to convince daddy that it was take your baby to work day today... but he didn't believe us! Owen tried to follow him out the door (or window, perhaps?) ...

P.S. Yes, this is what his hair looks like if I don't do anything to it!

Walking

Owen is quite the walker. He finds it best to walk with something in each hand. And sometimes he falls still ... but it's usually not a bad spill.

New Stimuli

Owen and I are up in Issaquah visiting my parents and crew. Owen has been fighting sleep here because he finds all of the new people, animals and things to be very, very entertaining. Plus now that he's officially walking everywhere, he must always be on the go!

As you can tell by yesterday's pictures, he's getting along well with his cousins. Mikah (5) really enjoys him and likes to help him out by holding his hand when he walks. Owen did something he was not supposed to do and she said to me, "you should have been watching him. .... do you want me to watch him?" Haha. Kellen (3) says "he should take a nap" which is code for "he needs to stop playing with my toys."

Owen is fascinated with the tiny 3-pound dog, Porter. He tries to pet him but it is more like swatting and hair-pulling so Porter isn't actually too big of a fan of Owen. I also could not get Owen to try apple pie but he did try some dog food. And I have to hide Porter's dish to keep him from going back for more. Luckily, Porter is well-fed and his food is all-natural, organic, etc, etc. Owen also likes to follow the cat around the house, although the cat is much, much too fast for him, and he learned a long time ago that little boys are not his friend, thanks to Kellen.

Here are some more pictures from today.
